Cable cars are synonymous with San Francisco, but do you know about their history? The world’s last manually operated cable car system — an iconic San Francisco attraction — has remained essentially unchanged since its invention in 1873 by engineer Andrew Hallidie. At night, these historic cars take rest in the cable car barn and powerhouse on Mason Street, where they are meticulously maintained. Celebrate Transit Month by joining ϴfor a special tour of the barn to see how the cars on the city’s three remaining cable system lines are kept running after 150 years of operation — and counting!
